Hello and welcome to Newington Green Action Group!

Newington Green Action Group is an all-volunteer, grassroots charity. We were set up in 1997 and played a key role in reviving Newington Green, conserving the area and its history and running events.  

As the area has changed, so has our focus. We are now prioritising our community cohesion work and concentrating on making Newington Green a good place to live for all - especially our most vulnerable residents.

We have always felt strongly about the ‘Action Group’ part of our name, and when Covid started and we set up community support measures and a Food Hub, we were delighted to have an incredible response from local residents.

We are now trying to transition this strong local engagement into longer-term, sustainable projects to support the community.

We support people within a 15 minute walk of Newington Green: this generally covers the Mildmay ward of Islington and areas of Hackney within 1/4 mile of Newington Green.

What do we do?

The Coronavirus pandemic and ensuing lockdowns hit our community hard, so in March 2020 we focused our efforts on coordinating a community response.  We helped hundreds of residents and connected many more as we:

• Delivered over 15,000 leaflets to the Mildmay/Newington Green area

• Recruited and verified over 300 volunteers

• Set up a food hub and delivered bespoke food packages to over 350 people twice a week for over 4 months.

• Provided 1 :1 support for those who needed help

• Bought and delivered groceries for those unable to reach a shop

• Collected prescriptions

• Made phone calls to those feeling vulnerable or isolated

• Advised on matters of council tax, universal credit, government grants & setting up online banking

• Supported Care homes

• Gave residents access to mobile phones with credit and user-friendly large buttons.

• Co-ordinated a weekly cake drop for local carers

• Supported by local business Stitch by Stitch, sourced materials to help people make their own masks at home.

• Provided face masks to carers, volunteers, local businesses and families receiving support from our Food Hub.

• Established an online directory of businesses open during covid and the services provided

• Started a newsletter that reached thousands of local people each week

• Collaborated with local businesses, primary schools, food banks and mental health charities.
